What a beautiful September and October we had here in Manitoba! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could hold onto this warm, sunny feeling for a few more weeks?

Alas, we all know that winter’s coming. It’s inevitable in this province. The brisk, brutal winds of winter will have us reaching for thermal socks and toques before we know it. Before you start wrapping your Christmas gifts and sending out cards though, you need to wrap up the camping season.

If you haven’t done them already, this is your friendly reminder of the six things that are really important to your successful winter storage of your RV.

  • Completely drain your water system (including fresh water, black and grey tanks) and fill with RV approved antifreeze. Make sure to bypass the hot water tank when adding the antifreeze so that it doesn’t fill and cause an unpleasant smell/taste to next year’s water.
  • Remove your RV battery and store it in a warm, dry spot indoors. A heated garage is ideal.
  • Wash the exterior of the RV paying particular attention to the roof and the awning. Inspect for any damage and photograph for insurance purposes. (Just in case any winter damage does occur.)  Make sure the awning is dry and free of leaves before packing it back up. It’s important to keep it free of mold.
  • Empty the interior of all food. Vacuum and pay particular attention to the dinette for crumbs and morsels that might attract mice. Mice can be disastrous.
  • Clean and lubricate locks and hinges. In the spring, you’ll be glad you did.
  • Cover and protect wheels and tires from the elements.

Thoroughly cleaning and winterizing your RV each fall will help you protect your investment and make sure you have many more camping seasons to look forward to.
