You might not have WIFI at the campground, but we know your connection will be much better. That’s the thing about camping, it has the power to sooth, refresh and re-connect. When given time together in nature and the gadgets are stripped away, you can get down to what really matters… making memories and sharing experiences with the people you love.

Connecting with nature is as easy as taking a walk or sitting peacefully amongst the trees. But seeing trees on a screen while scrolling Instagram, or seeing a funny video of a dog is simply no substitute for actually walking through the trees or taking your dog on a hike. These are things that must be experienced!  See something on a screen and it will not make an impact or become a core memory, however, when you actually participate and experience it with all your senses, the memory will last.

For example, when you smell the scent of the evergreen trees, feel the warmth of the sunshine on your face, hear the hoot of an owl or the crunching of leaves under your feet nature comes alive for you. It’s a sensory experience that gets into your soul. It stays there for the days when you need it.

Have you ever tried meditation or visualization? When asked to think of a happy place, the vast majority of people think about being in nature. So having a memory of a peaceful, happy times camping can actually be your “happy place” 365 days a year. It will be there, at least in your memory, whenever you need it.

There was a Danish study, cited by the American Psychological Society, that took place from 1985-2003 and studied greenspace exposure in children from birth to aged 10. The study concluded that “For those with the lowest levels of green space exposure during childhood, the risk of developing mental illness was 55% higher than for those who grew up with abundant green space.” They found that children who lived in neighborhoods with more green space had a reduced risk of many psychiatric disorders later in life, including depression, mood disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and substance use disorder.

The study validates what camping enthusiasts have “always known” that connecting with nature and being surrounded by trees, water and wildlife is good for your soul and contributes in a positive way to long-term wellness and overall health.
